The Hospice Volunteer Association (HVA) was created in 2005 to organize hospice caregiving
volunteers into a group with common goals and a united voice. No other organization
in the U.S. or abroad solely represents and serves the needs of hospice volunteers
and their managers.
Given that an estimated 500,000 people volunteer in the nation's 4,500 hospice organizations
annually, providing more than ten million hours of service each year, the need for
HVA is greater than ever. The response of the hospice community to the establishment
of HVA has been nothing less than phenomenal. In 2008 our membership doubled,
now approaching 1000 members in the US and abroad.
The benefits of being an HVA member are growing each day. Here are just
a few examples:
|
- Access to HVA's Patient Data Vault (PDV) Service – this exclusive service for HVA Members
only, is revolutionizing volunteer management and reducing the costs associated with managing a volunteer force. This exclusive
member-only subscription service currently has over 4,000 active users, successfully created and processed over 250,000 patient visit
reports for our member hospices and currently manages over 25,000 patients for those hospices. You and your volunteers will enjoy
the convenience of being able to communicate about, coordinate, report on and access information
for their patient assignments via the Internet 24/7. The PDV not only provides a very secure storage vault for patient data,
it also provides the utmost in communication flexibility that satisfies the stringent data privacy protection requirements of HIPAA.
- Access to Hospice Volunteer News archive – HV News is the best magazine in the world
for hospice volunteers and volunteer managers. Each issue is filled with interesting interviews and useful articles written
by a variety of experts in the hospice profession.
- FREE memberships for your volunteers – if you are a Volunteer Coordinator/Manager
of a hospice and you join HVA (only $50 per year), all of your volunteers can then
join for free.
- Discounts at our Caregiver's Store - our store offers significant discounts on a
variety of books, CD's, DVD's and manuals that are unique to hospice volunteering and volunteer management.
- Many volunteer resources – HVA offers many tools
that will inspire and assist volunteers in their work. This is a wonderful gift to give to new volunteers - use it to attract
new volunteers to your organization! An HVA membership gives them another resource which instills confidence in serving their
patients by furthering their education and recognizing them as an important part of the hospice team.
- Priority Referrals from the Volunteer Referral Network – HVA frequently receives
inquiries from individuals around the country requesting information on how they can become hospice volunteers. With this
new service, HVA member hospices receive priority notification of potential volunteer candidates in their area.
- FREE access to our Hospice Community Forum (HCF) – this is HVA's social media site
which contains videos, a discussion forum, blogs and a variety of discussion groups.
- Full privileges to the National Hospice Document Repository (NHDR) – this repository
is the largest collection of hospice-related documents and news articles in the
country. Your membership gives you full access to all of the capabilities of the
NHDR.

There are many other things that HVA is presently working on that will allow hospices
to better serve their communities.
We encourage you to join HVA if you are not already a member. The more members,
the more services HVA can provide that will benefit all hospices. If you are a volunteer,
tell your volunteer coordinator about HVA.
